Question

Why did my MAPFRE homeowners insurance premium go up this year?

I’m a first-time homeowner, so maybe this is normal and I just didn’t know what to expect, but I was pretty irritated when I opened my MAPFRE renewal and saw the price jump. I haven’t filed any claims, nothing happened to the house, and nothing changed on my end. So why am I suddenly paying more?

I knew owning a home would be expensive, but this feels like the kind of surprise nobody warns you about. Is MAPFRE known for raising rates like this, or is this just happening everywhere right now?

MAPFRE, like most homeowners insurance companies, doesn’t raise rates randomly. But it can definitely feel that way when nothing about your home has changed.

What you’re experiencing is actually pretty common right now. Across the industry, homeowners insurance premiums have been going up, even for people who haven’t filed a claim. A big reason is that the cost to repair or rebuild homes has increased; things like labor, materials, and contractor costs have all gone up in recent years.

There’s also been an increase in weather-related claims, especially in parts of the country that deal with storms, wind, or winter damage. Even if your house hasn’t had a claim, those broader trends can still impact your rate.

MAPFRE may also update things behind the scenes at renewal, like:

That said, your individual policy still matters. Things like your deductible, coverage limits, and discounts can all affect how much your rate changes year to year.

The best next step is to ask your agent for a side-by-side comparison of last year’s policy and this year’s renewal. That can help pinpoint exactly what changed.

If the increase still feels high, it’s also reasonable to compare quotes from a couple of other insurers. Even if you stay with MAPFRE, that gives you a better sense of whether your new rate is in line with the market. If you decide you want to shop around and check out your options, our agents are always happy to help with this! Just give them a call, and they can shop around and talk to you through it all.
