Question

What can you do if Mercury offers less than your repair estimate?

We had some storm damage to our home and filed a claim with Mercury. They approved repairs, but the estimate they gave us is quite a bit lower than what our contractor says it will cost.

I’m not sure what to do next. Is this something you can push back on, or is the insurance company’s number basically final?

This situation is more common than you might think, and you are not necessarily stuck with the first number Mercury gives you.

Insurance estimates and contractor estimates often differ because they are based on different methods and pricing tools. Mercury’s adjuster may be using standard estimating software, while your contractor is factoring in real-world material costs, labor availability, or repair work that goes beyond the insurer’s initial scope.

That does not always mean the lower estimate is final. In many cases, you can ask Mercury for a detailed breakdown of how the claim payment was calculated and compare it line by line with your contractor’s bid. That can help you spot whether the difference comes down to missing repairs, lower pricing assumptions, or limits in your coverage.

It is also worth reviewing your policy so you understand what type of damage is covered, whether any exclusions apply, and how your deductible affects the amount you receive. Even when a claim is approved, the final payout can still depend on those details and the documentation supporting the repairs.

If your contractor believes the estimate is too low, you can usually send that estimate back to Mercury and ask for a second review. In some cases, the insurer may revise the payout if the added costs are supported. Your contractor may also be able to speak directly with the adjuster to explain where the numbers differ.

If needed, you can also ask whether a reinspection is possible. The key thing to remember is that the first estimate is not always the last word. Claim payments can change as new information comes in, especially when the repair scope becomes clearer.
