You can file a renters insurance claim without receipts, but moving forward you should keep an up-to-date inventory of your personal belongings with photos and get an appraisal for big-ticket items.

If you reach out to your insurance company, they will let you know what all would be covered under your policy and if you would be reimbursed actual cash value or replacement cost for property lost. Good luck.

If I have an open claim on a totaled car, how do I handle the insurance?

There's a couple of things to think about. First, canceling the coverage on this vehicle will not cancel the claim. As long as the policy was active at the time of the accident (which it sounds like it was), you should be fine. Second, if your car is totaled, you can cancel your insurance if you a…

If my girlfriend is moving in with me, should we get separate renters insurance policies?

Here is a good article on sharing renters insurance with a roommate. In my personal opinion, sharing a policy with any person who isn't a spouse is not a good idea. The amount of coverage on the policy is split in half and any claim made by the other party will also be attached to your insurance re…

Is a police report required when a parked car is hit?

Texas law states you must file a police report if the accident resulted in physical injury (or death) or property damage exceeding least $1,000. If your daughter is filing an uninsured motorist claim (i.e., a hit and run), I recommend filing a police report. You can submit a Driver's Crash Report u…
