Question

Why did Hippo ask for an inspection after they already gave me a quote?

I went through the whole process with Hippo online and got a quote pretty quickly, which was great. But then they mentioned the house might need an inspection. That caught me off guard. If they already gave me a quote, why do they need to check the house afterward?

With Hippo, getting a quick online quote is often just the first step. In some cases, the company may still require a home inspection after the policy is issued. This is pretty common and isn't a red flag.

The first quote is usually based on the information you provide, along with public data about the property. The inspection gives the insurer a chance to confirm the details, like:

  • The condition of the roof
  • Visible exterior wear and tear
  • Possible risks around the property

That doesn’t automatically mean Hippo thinks something is wrong with your house. It’s usually more about verifying the risk before fully committing to long-term coverage.

Depending on what the inspection shows, the company may ask for certain repairs or updates, or it may adjust parts of the coverage. In some cases, nothing changes at all. The process is meant to help insurers avoid surprises later, especially when it comes to claims.

If you’re looking at Hippo (or, really, any home insurance company), it’s a good idea to ask upfront whether an inspection may be required and what they tend to look for. You’re the customer, and it’s perfectly reasonable to ask those questions while you’re deciding whether the policy is the right fit.

It can feel a little backward to have an inspection after getting a quote, but that’s part of how many newer insurers balance speed with risk review. But if you want to keep your options open and see what other companies have to offer, reach out to our agents and they'd be happy to compare rates and find a good fit for you.
