This isn't fun, but at least they were honest and left their information! Start by documenting everything about the incident. Take photos of the damage, the note, your vehicle’s position and anything else that helps show what happened. It is also a good idea to jot down the time, date and location while it is still fresh.

Next, contact the other driver’s insurance company to begin a claim. Provide the details from the note along with your photos and any supporting information. If their driver is confirmed at fault, their insurer should cover the cost of repairs.

You should also notify your own insurance company, even if you plan to go through the other driver’s policy. Many insurers require this, and they can step in if there are delays, disputes or issues verifying the other driver’s coverage.

Keep in mind that while a note is a good sign, the information is not always accurate or current. If the policy is inactive or the driver cannot be reached, your own coverage such as collision or uninsured motorist property damage may apply.
