The Zebra’s auto insurance data methodology

The Zebra’s Dynamic Insurance Rating Tool for home and auto insurance rates utilizes the latest ZIP code-level rate filings from across the U.S., sourced from Quadrant Information Services and S&P Global. These filings, typically updated annually or biennially by insurers, are verified through Quadrant’s QA process and then integrated into The Zebra’s estimator.

The displayed rates are based on a dynamic home and auto profile designed to reflect the content of the page. This profile is tailored to match specific factors such as age, location, and coverage level, which are adjusted based on the page content to show how these variables can impact premiums.

For a comprehensive understanding, see our detailed methodology.

Unlike in many states, minimum coverage in the state of Michigan offers a reasonable amount of protection to you as a driver. Michigan minimum coverage laws are more robust than most states, and personal injury protection (PIP) is also required. Still, it covers far less than a full coverage policy would.

Michigan is a no-fault insurance state. In a no-fault system, drivers are required to carry personal injury protection. As a Michigan driver, you can choose your PIP limit:

  • Unlimited: No cap on medical expenses for life. This is the only level that guarantees coverage for catastrophic injuries, long-term rehabilitation, and 24-hour attendant care.
  • $500,000 or $250,000: These tiers cap your medical benefits at these specific amounts. Once the money is gone, you must rely on your own health insurance or pay out of pocket.
  • $50,000: This "budget" tier is only available to drivers enrolled in Medicaid. It offers very limited protection and is intended only for those with a significant government safety net.
  • PIP Opt-Out: Available only if you have Medicare (Parts A & B). By opting out, you rely entirely on Medicare for auto-related injuries.

Zebra tip: Watch out for the renewal trap

One of the biggest points of confusion for Michigan drivers is the paperwork. If you choose a capped PIP limit ($250k, $50k) or an opt-out, you must resubmit your proof of healthcare documentation every 6 months upon renewal.

If you forget to submit your paperwork, Michigan law requires insurers to automatically "default" you back to a higher level—usually Unlimited PIP—which can cause your premium to suddenly spike. Keep those Medicaid or Medicare forms handy!

Cheap full coverage insurance in Michigan

In 2026, the average cost of full coverage insurance in Michigan is $1,371 for a six-month policy. Full coverage is a popular choice here, with 54% of The Zebra’s Michigan customers opting for quotes that offer this more comprehensive protection.

It's no surprise that this is far more than what liability-only coverage costs (though Michigan's high limits make minimum coverage pricey, too). But, The Zebra recommends carrying comprehensive and collision coverage for most drivers. Full coverage insurance protects you against perils that minimum coverage will not — including  most car accidentstheftsvandalism, or weather incidents.

The Zebra's guide to Michigan car insurance laws for high-risk drivers

Violations like reckless driving or a DUI will require you to make changes to your insurance policy.

Learn more about car insurance requirements in the state of Michigan with our helpful guide and see our brief explanations of how DUIs and SR22s affect your insurance below.

Michigan DUI laws

In Michigan, an OWI (operating while intoxicated) offense can increase your annual car insurance premium significantly. Finding affordable auto insurance in the wake of a DUI violation isn’t simple. In fact, an OWI often brings about a bigger premium increase than any single road violation — more than an at-fault accident, racing, or reckless driving.

Low-cost car insurance after a DUI in Michigan

If you're convicted of a DUI or OWI violation in Michigan, it’s important to consider each of your insurance options carefully. Auto insurance rates following a DUI can vary substantially from one insurer to another. Take a look at the table below to compare average premiums from leading insurers in Michigan.

There is no particular car insurer that offers cheap DUI car insurance. The recommended way to save in the wake of a DUI citation is to shop around.

Michigan SR-22 insurance

An SR-22 is a routine legal requirement triggered by a violation such as a DUI conviction, a ticket for driving without insurance, an at-fault collision, driving with a suspended license, or accumulating too many points on your license. It is not a type of insurance policy, but a form issued by your insurance company with the state of Michigan to ensure that you remain insured.

Finding cheap auto insurance with an SR-22 in Michigan might require some research, but it could pay off in the end.

How to obtain an SR-22 in Michigan

Currently insured?

If you currently have auto insurance, getting an SR-22 is relatively easy. Phone your insurer and ask them to file a SR-22 request on your behalf. If your current auto insurance company refuses to request an SR-22 certificate, you’ll need to shop for a new policy with a new insurance company.

Uninsured drivers

When filing for car insurance, you might face an up-front fee for the prospective insurer to file an SR-22 request form and to cover your more risky driving profile. Needing an SR-22 could disqualify you from being insured by some carriers, while others would be happy to cover you.

For drivers who don’t own a vehicle

Needing an SR-22 might disqualify you from purchasing insurance from some companies, while others would be happy to sell you a policy.

For drivers without a vehicle

Not owning a vehicle makes it more difficult to obtain an SR-22, as you will need to furnish proof of insurance to receive the certificate. If you don't own a car, purchase a non-owners car insurance policy before asking for an SR-22. A non-owners policy is often less pricey than traditional coverage since it doesn't insure against physical damages to your car.

How have car insurance costs in Michigan changed?

In recent years, auto insurance rates in Michigan experienced significant fluctuations due to state regulations, risk factors, and economic conditions. Between 2015 and 2018, rates steadily climbed because of Michigan's unique no-fault insurance system, which required unlimited personal injury protection (PIP) coverage, leading to higher claims costs.[4] This trend continued into 2020, making Michigan one of the most expensive states for auto insurance, thanks to high rates of uninsured drivers and PIP system fraud.

Car insurance rates in Michigan from 2015-2026
YearAvg. Annual Premium — Michigan
2026 $2,741
2025 $2,644
2024 $2,312
2023 $2,827
2022 $2,176
2021 $2,639
2020 $2,535
2019 $3,106
2018 $2,884
2017 $1,796
2016 $1,562
2015 $1,885

In 2020, reforms were introduced to help cut costs by letting drivers choose their level of PIP coverage. This slowed the rate of increase a bit, and some people saw lower premiums. However, issues like fraud and high medical costs kept premiums high. By 2024, Michigan's auto insurance rates were still among the highest in the country, but the rate of increase had slowed down compared to previous years.

Michigan car insurance FAQs

Below you'll find answers to some of the most commonly asked questions regarding Michigan auto insurance.

You could be paying high car insurance rates due to personal factors— claims or violations on your record, poor credit, or young drivers on your policy. If none of these apply, it's important to note that inflation and rising repair costs play a big role.

Travelers offered the cheapest full coverage in Michigan at $110/mo. This is based on a standard user profile, so keep in mind that rates are dependent on a variety of factors like ZIP code, credit score and driving history.

Nationwide was given top marks in JD Power's latest study — the highest available in Michigan.

The main reasons Michigan drivers pay so much for auto insurance are the high number of uninsured drivers, insurance fraud claims and the unlimited amount of PIP coverage required for bare minimum coverage.

In order to meet the state minimum auto insurance requirements in Michigan, you must carry 250/500/10: which represents bodily injury per person, bodily injury coverage per accident, and property damage coverage. In Michigan, PIP is also required in the amount you select (between $250,000 and unlimited).

In Michigan, teen drivers pay exceptionally high rates: $4,372 for a 6-month full coverage policy. The cheapest option is GEICO, with rates around $282 per month. Teens can save by staying on their parents' policy and taking advantage of savings like good-student discounts.
