Question

Are the agents local and hands-on?

Are American Family agents really involved compared with other insurers? My current company feels pretty hands-off (did it online, not through an actual office). Are the AmFam agents actually more helpful when something goes wrong with your house?

American Family Insurance does tend to emphasize a local agent model, so the experience can feel more hands-on than companies that sell policies mostly online. In fact, working with an agent is usually part of how you sign up for American Family home insurance in the first place.

Instead of buying everything through a website and never talking to anyone again, American Family policies are typically handled through local agents who help set up coverage, answer questions, and guide you through claims if something happens.

For homeowners, that can make a difference in a few situations:

  1. Coverage setup
A local agent can help you review things like dwelling limits, liability coverage, and optional protections. Many homeowners find that helpful when they’re trying to avoid being underinsured.
  2. Claims guidance
If something happens to your house, your agent can walk you through the claims process and explain what documentation the insurer will need. Some customers say having a person they can call directly makes stressful situations easier to manage.
  3. Ongoing policy help
Agents can also help adjust coverage when life changes. For example if you remodel your kitchen, add a deck, or buy higher-value belongings.

That said, the experience still depends a lot on the individual agent and office. Some homeowners report excellent communication and follow-up, while others say service can vary depending on the agent they work with.

So yes, compared with companies that focus heavily on online sales, American Family’s structure often leads to a more personal experience. But it isn’t automatically better for everyone. Some homeowners prefer the convenience of managing everything digitally without needing to call an office.

If you like the idea of having a local contact who knows your policy and property, American Family’s agent model can be appealing. If you prefer a completely self-service approach, a more digital-first insurer might feel simpler.

What is O&L coverage and why do I have it?

O and L stands for Ordinance and Law. Though your agent said that it wouldn't cover code upgrades, perhaps he meant that if a code went into law, your insurance isn't going to accept claims to upgrade the home and bring it up to code — unless your home suffers a loss. What this coverage does is tha…
