Question

Will American Modern only insure really valuable homes?

I was talking to an agent about homeowners insurance and they mentioned American Modern, but the way they described it made it sound like it’s for really high-end or unusual homes.

My house is nice, but it’s not some luxury property. It’s just an older place that’s been updated over time. I’m wondering if this company is even meant for someone like me, or if they mostly focus on high-value homes.

American Modern does insure some higher-value or unique homes, but it’s not limited to luxury properties.

American Modern is what’s called a specialty insurer. That means they focus on homes that don’t always fit neatly into standard insurance guidelines. That can include high-value homes, but also older houses, seasonal homes, manufactured homes, or properties with unique features.

So, your situation, an older home that’s been updated, could actually be a good fit.

Where American Modern tends to stand out is in its flexibility. If a traditional insurer is hesitant because of the home’s age, condition, or non-standard features, American Modern may still be willing to write the policy.

That said, the coverage and pricing can be a little different than what you’d see with a more traditional homeowners policy. In some cases, policies may be more tailored (consider added endorsements), and it’s important to look closely at:

  • Coverage limits
  • How the home is valued (replacement cost vs. other methods)
  • Any restrictions based on the property type

The best way to think about it is this: American Modern isn’t just for expensive homes; it’s for homes that need a more customized approach to insurance. If your home doesn’t quite fit the “typical” mold, it’s definitely worth considering alongside a few other quotes.

American Modern also offers renters insurance, pet insurance, protection for recreational items such as boats or collector cars, and earthquake coverage.
