Question

Is Cincinnati's underwriting strict?

I tried getting a Cincinnati homeowners quote and they asked a lot more questions about my roof and the property than other insurers did. Are they stricter about underwriting? This is my first house and a local insurance guy has been shopping for me.

Yes, it’s possible that Cincinnati Insurance asked more questions than other companies, and that doesn’t necessarily mean something is wrong with your house. In many cases, it reflects a more thorough underwriting process.

When insurers quote a homeowners policy, they’re trying to understand the risk of insuring the property. That’s why companies often ask detailed questions about things like your roof age, roof material, updates to plumbing or electrical systems, and general maintenance. Those details help them estimate how likely the home is to generate a claim.

Cincinnati Insurance is known for taking a more agent-driven and personalized approach to underwriting. Instead of quick online quotes, the company typically sells policies through independent agents who gather detailed information about the property before issuing coverage. Because of that, the process can feel more detailed than what you might see from large online insurers.

In practice, insurance companies that ask more questions upfront are often trying to avoid surprises later. For example, roofs are one of the most common sources of homeowners claims, so insurers frequently ask about:

  • Roof age and condition
  • Previous storm damage
  • Whether the roof has been replaced or repaired
  • Trees or other hazards near the home

If the insurer understands those factors ahead of time, it reduces the chance of coverage issues or disputes after a claim.

Another reason Cincinnati may seem stricter is that it often insures more well-maintained homes and/or higher-value properties, where accurate coverage and rebuild costs matter more. So the extra questions usually aren’t a red flag—they’re part of a more traditional underwriting approach.

If you’re comparing quotes, it’s still worth asking your agent a few follow-ups:

  • Would an inspection be required after binding the policy?
  • Are there roof age limits?
  • How does Cincinnati handle wind and hail claims in Texas?

That way you’ll know exactly what the expectations are before committing to the policy. And if you decide you want to shop around and compare a few more companies, you can always reach out to our agents, who are happy to help you with finding the right coverage.

What is O&L coverage and why do I have it?

O and L stands for Ordinance and Law. What this coverage does is tha…
