Rideshare Insurance

Between the lines of commercial and personal auto insurance

What is rideshare insurance?

So, you want to drive for Uber or Lyft but aren’t sure about the insurance? Well, you’re not alone. Working as a rideshare driver complicates the seemingly straightforward relationship between personal (what most people insure their cars as) and commercial (business-type policies) insurance. Insurance companies had to create entirely new rules and regulations to accommodate the growing trend of ridesharing. Conveniently, it’s called rideshare coverage and you can purchase it through most personal auto policies.

To keep things simple, rideshare coverage extends your personal auto policy while you’re working for companies like Uber and Lyft but haven’t accepted a ride request yet. Once you have accepted a ride, coverage from Uber and Lyft takes over.

In this article, we will discuss:

  1. How does rideshare insurance actually work?
  2. Do I really need rideshare insurance?
  3. What kind of coverage does Lyft/Uber provide to their drivers?
  4. What the rideshare insurance in my state look like?

How it works

Using these stages, we can break down how and when rideshare kicks in. Let’s start at the beginning.

Rideshare Insurance: Broken Down

Period 0 Period 1 Period 2 Period 3
Offline: Your Personal Policy Online WITHOUT ride request: Rideshare Insurance + Lyft/Uber Policy Online WITH ride request but NO rider: Lyft/Uber Policy Online WITH rider in vehicle: Lyft/Uber Policy

Period 0: this is when the driver is not using a rideshare app. This could be everything from going to the doctor's office to getting groceries.

Period 1: This period begins when you're driving around, with the app active, but have not yet received a pick-up request. Here, you would be covered by Rideshare Insurance PLUS Uber and Lyft Insurance. Therefore, you need rideshare coverage. Although both Uber and Lyft offer coverage during this period, they only offer liability protection to other vehicles or passengers. In essence, your vehicle has no protection. So, with your rideshare insurance, your personal auto policy extends your personal auto policy to your vehicle.

Period 2: Period 2 begins when you have the app active, have received a request, and are on the way to pick up your customer. This is when your personal policy and rideshare insurance stops providing coverage and all your coverage is from Lyft and Uber’s policies.

Period 3: This period begins when you have the app open and are currently driving your customer to their destination. With this one, Lyft or Uber's insurance kicks in.

With the rideshare endorsement, whatever you have with your personal auto policy is extended throughout period 1. Period 2 and 3 are identical in terms of insurance possibilities. From when you receive a ride request to when you drop the rider off, you have coverage through Uber, Lyft, or most rideshare services. But the amount of coverage varies per rideshare service as well as by state which we will cover.

Why rideshare insurance is necessary

In addition to being covered while you’re waiting for a ride request, rideshare coverage makes it so your insurance company can’t cancel you for being a rideshare driver. Most drivers have their cars insured for personal use, using your vehicle in a business fashion, as rideshare drivers do, actually constitutes as a commercial policy. Commercial and personal use policies are very different—both in what they cover and how much they cost. It is imperative for you to be covered correctly if you want to both stay insured and have any claims paid by your insurance provider.

Lyft & Uber Coverage

Uber's Coverage

Period 0 Period 1 Period 2 & 3
Offline - Your Personal Policy Liability Only - State requirement $1 million Liability, $1M UIM/UM, Contingent Collision and Comprehensive

Lyft insurance coverage

Period 0 Period 1 Period 2 & 3
Offline - Your Personal Policy Liability Only - State requirement $1 million Liability/UIM/UM, Contingent Collision and Comprehensive

While Lyft and Uber both follow the Period 0-3 guidelines, the amount of coverage they offer to their drivers varies. Both Lyft and Uber use Contingent Collision and Comprehensive coverage during periods 2 and 3. By this, they mean their collision and comprehensive coverage are dependent on your personal policy also having the same coverage. Moreover, Lyft and Uber both offer limits of $50K per person for bodily injury, $100K per accident for bodily injury, and $25K per accident for property damage (read as 100/50/25)—both of which are designed to meet or exceed state limits. Meaning, if your state requirement is 50/100/30, Lyft will match that—raising their property damage limit to $30,000. However, Lyft and Uber will not lower their limits to meet state’s requirements and will always remain, at minimum, their 50/100/25 company regulations.

Lyft and Uber differ in the monetary value of deductibles they offer during periods 2 and 3. Uber offers a $1,000 deductibles for collision and comprehensive claims while Lyft sets their deductibles at $2,500 with a maximum payout of $50,000 per accident.
